TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Current TOEFL iBT Format (as of December 2025)
The TOEFL iBT was shortened in July 2023 and currently lasts under 2 hours (approximately 116 minutes total, excluding breaks). It has four sections:

Reading: 20 questions, based on 2 passages (academic texts). Time: ~35 minutes.
Listening: 28 questions, based on lectures and conversations. Time: ~36 minutes.
Speaking: 4 tasks (1 independent + 3 integrated, combining reading/listening/speaking). Time: ~16 minutes.
Writing: 2 tasks (1 integrated + 1 “Academic Discussion” task). Time: ~29 minutes.
Testing Options:
At a test center.
Home Edition (proctored online, available most days).
Scoring:
Each section: 0–30.
Total: 0–120.
Scores are valid for 2 years.
Upcoming Changes (Starting January 21, 2026):
ETS is introducing significant updates for a more adaptive, fair, and modern experience:
Multi-stage adaptive design in Reading and Listening (difficulty adjusts based on performance).
New task types with shorter stimuli and more relatable topics.
Even shorter duration (estimated 67–85 minutes).
New scoring: Section scores on a 1–6 band scale, with an overall banded score (average of sections).
Existing 0–30 section scores will still be reported alongside the new bands for continuity.
These changes aim to reduce bias, improve accessibility, and better reflect real-world academic English use. Preparation materials will be updated accordingly.
